Two Linen Closet Tricks a Professional Organizer Uses in Her Own Home

A client recently loved a few quick organizing tips I shared from my own house, so I thought I'd pass them along to you too. People assume a professional organizer's home runs on fancy products and systems. Honestly, mine runs on a handful of simple habits. They take the guesswork out of everyday decisions and keep things tidy without much effort.

The linen closet is a great place to start. It's usually small, it fills up fast, and a little structure goes a long way. Here are two linen closet organization ideas I use at home that you can try this weekend.

1. Store Each Sheet Set Inside One of Its Pillowcases

This is the one my client got excited about.

Once a set of sheets is washed and dry, I fold the fitted sheet, the flat sheet, and the extra pillowcase. Then I tuck them all inside one of the matching pillowcases. That's it: one neat bundle per set.

Why it works:

  • No more hunting. You won't dig through a pile looking for the matching top sheet or that one missing pillowcase.

  • Neater shelves. The bundles stack like little packages, so the closet doesn't slowly slide into a heap.

  • Faster bed changes. When guests are coming or it's time to change my own sheets, I grab one bundle and know everything is there.

Your folding doesn't have to be perfect, either. A rough rectangle is fine. Once it's inside the pillowcase, no one will ever know.

📍 Pro tip for Washington homes: Make sure your sheets are completely dry before you bundle them. In our damp climate, linens that are even slightly damp can pick up a musty smell in a closed closet.

2. Give Every Bed a Home (and Keep Just Two Sets)

My second habit is about how much I keep. For each bed in our house, I keep two sets of sheets: one on the bed and one in the closet. When one set comes off for the wash, the other goes on. That's the whole rotation.

Each bed also gets its own labeled spot on the shelf, like "Guest Room – Queen" or "Primary – King." That way anyone in the house can find the right sheets without asking me. This is especially handy if you have different bed sizes at home. A queen fitted sheet looks a lot like a king until you're wrestling it onto the mattress.

If your linen closet is overflowing, use this as your chance to declutter. Pull out:

  • the extra sets you never reach for

  • sheets for a bed you no longer own

  • anything thin, stained, or pilled

Small Changes, Lasting Results

Neither of these tricks requires buying a single bin or basket. They're small changes, but they mean fewer decisions and one less space to think about. That's really the heart of how I approach organizing: simple systems that fit your real life and actually stick.
