Don't Trash It — Where to Donate Almost Anything in Thurston County

You finally did it. You cleared out the garage, tackled that spare room, or finally went through your pantry. And now you're standing there surrounded by bags and boxes of things that are perfectly good — just not for you anymore.

The last thing you want is to see it all end up in a landfill.

The good news? Thurston County has a genuinely impressive network of local organizations that will put your gently used items directly into the hands of people who need them. You just need to know where to look — and what each place actually accepts.

This is your go-to guide for donating responsibly right here in the South Sound.

Before You Load the Car: A Few Things Worth Knowing

Donation centers aren't storage units for things that are past their prime. The golden rule: donate things you'd actually give to a friend. Clean, functional, and in good condition. When in doubt, call ahead — most local organizations are incredibly gracious about it, and it saves everyone time.

Also worth knowing: many places have specific needs at specific times, and some have pickup options if you're dealing with larger items or a full household clear-out. I've noted those below so you can plan accordingly.

Not Sure What Goes Where? A Quick Cheat Sheet

  • 🛋️ Furniture & appliances → Habitat for Humanity ReStore (checkout their website and call ahead with questions on specific items)

  • 🧼 Hygiene supplies & 🥫shelf-stable food → SafePlace Olympia, Thurston County Food Bank

  • 🖼️ Mixed household goods → Habitat for Humanity ReStore, Goodwill, Value Village

  • 🔨Building materials & tools → Habitat for Humanity ReStore

  • 📚 Children's items & books → SafePlace Olympia, Family Support Center of South Sound

  • 🐾Pet food, blankets & supplies → Joint Animal Services, Concern for Animals

👕For Clothing, Shoes & 🖼️ Everyday Household Items

Olympia Union Gospel Mission

This is one of the most impactful places in Thurston County to bring clothing donations. Their Joseph's Coat clothing bank distributes thousands of items directly to community members in need — no cost, no barriers. They accept clean, new and gently used clothing, coats, blankets, sleeping bags, shoes, and personal hygiene supplies.

Ongoing Needs:

  • Dental: good quality, soft toothbrushes

  • Hygiene Supplies: Women’s hygiene, deodorant, underwear (men boxers sizes 30-38 & women all sizes), socks, conditioner, razors, shaving cream, wash clothes.

  • Street Ministry: Tents, sleeping bags, tarps, backpacks, duffle bag, men’s pants (32-36 waist), women’s pants (3-15 size), hoodies, boots, sweatshirts & sweatpants

  • Kitchen: #10 cans of fruits and vegetables, fresh produce

Value Village

If you have a large volume of clothing and household items, Value Village is a convenient drop-off option. They accept most gently used goods and the donation process is quick and easy around the back of the building.

Goodwill

Goodwill is another option with a convenient drop-off option that accepts a variety of gently used items — clothing, books, housewares, small appliances, toys, games, luggage, and more. There are multiple locations serving Thurston County, including stores in Olympia (400 Cooper Point Rd SW) and along the Martin Way corridor, open seven days a week.

🚩One important note: Goodwill is currently NOT accepting furniture donations, so if you have larger pieces to offload, scroll down to Habitat for Humanity. Call ahead to confirm current donation lane hours since they occasionally close for processing.

🛋️ For Furniture, Appliances & Home Goods

Habitat for Humanity ReStore — South Puget Sound

This one is a gem, especially if you're dealing with furniture, appliances, or building materials after a renovation or move. They have two locations — one in West Olympia and one in Yelm — and they offer free pickup for larger furniture donations in Thurston County. Proceeds fund affordable home construction right here in our community.

This is genuinely one of my favorite places to refer clients to because the larger furniture pickup option removes one of the biggest hurdles in the whole process.

⭐Pro tip: Goodwill and the Habitat ReStore are both located at 400 Cooper Point Rd SW — so if you're doing a big clear-out with a mix of items, you can knock out both donations in one trip. Park once, drop off everything, done.

🥫For Food & Non-Perishables

They welcome food and non-food donations at their pantries and warehouse, and have drop boxes at various area businesses for convenience. 🐾For the Animals

Don't forget your four-legged neighbors. If your declutter turns up extra pet supplies, blankets, towels, or unopened food — there are two wonderful local organizations that will put them to immediate use.

Joint Animal Services

The official animal shelter for Olympia, Lacey, Tumwater, and unincorporated Thurston County. They always need blankets, paper towels, quality canned and dry pet food, pill pockets and other pet supplies. Their wish list updates regularly, so check their website at jointanimalservices.org/shelter-needs before you head over to make sure what you have matches what they currently need.

  • Donations can be dropped off at the shelter located at 3120 Martin Way in Olympia

Concern for Animals

This Olympia-based nonprofit has been serving Thurston, Mason, Lewis, and Grays Harbor counties since 1980. What makes them especially meaningful to know about: they run a weekly pet food bank for families who are struggling to feed their animals. If your declutter turns up extra dry and canned food, litter, bedding, toys, and general supplies, this is a beautiful place to send them — because keeping a pet fed and healthy during a hard season can mean everything to a family.

Letting Go Feels Better When You Know Where It's Going

There's something that happens when you let go of things intentionally — with a destination in mind — rather than just hauling them to the curb. It changes the whole feeling of a declutter.Instead of loss, it feels like contribution.

I see this with clients all the time. When we know that a coat is going to the Union Gospel Mission's clothing bank, that a bag of kids' clothes is headed to a foster family who needed them yesterday, that extra pet food is going to help a family keep their beloved dog fed through a tough month — the decision to let go becomes so much easier. Suddenly the declutter isn't about losing something. It's about choosing something.

If you're in the middle of a move, a major life transition, or just finally ready to tackle years of accumulated clutter, I'd love to help. We'll sort through what you have, make a plan for where it's all going, and leave you with a home that finally feels like it has room to breathe.

Know a local organization I missed? Drop it in the comments below — I'd love to keep this list growing for our community. The more we share, the more good we can do with the stuff we're letting go of.
